Q: Should I cut the lining of my beret before I form it.
A: Although this is a popular way to form a beret, you really shouldn't cut any part of your cadet uniform. So no, don't cut the liner. Need help forming your beret? Check out our videos and how-to instructions!

Q: I've heard that it's OK to assign push-ups to unruly cadets, as long as the person giving the order does the push-ups too. Is that true?
A: No, it's not true. While push-ups are a normal part of cadet life (PT, fitness test, etc.) it's not OK to use them as a form of punishment. Not even if the senior cadet or officer does them with the cadets.

The Supreme Court of Canada says that corporal punishment (any disciplinary measure designed to inflict pain or physical discomfort) can only be used by a parent, and then only in the case of a child aged 2-12.

Because your senior cadets, officers and CIs are not generally your parents and because the majority of cadets are older than 12, any kind of corporal punishment is just not a great idea. That's why all seniors and adults have to sign a code of conduct that says we won't use it. It's illegal. Besides, there are better ways to correct behaviour and teach discipline!

Q: What is a Fan Out?
A: Fan Out is the procedure used to send important information down the chain of command, and to get responses back up to the seniors and staff. Before everyone had internet, the Fan Out was a sort of phone chain. Section leaders would call cadets each week to tell them about the upcoming parade night, and to find out if anyone was going to be absent.

Your cadet corps may have a virtual Fan Out now, or information may be posted on a web site or Facebook page. Ask your section leader if you aren't sure where to find it.

Q: What is an FTX?
A: An FTX is a Field Training Exercise. This is your chance to apply the skills you are learning - in the field, of course! An FTX is usually a mandatory overnight activity. Most cadet corps will hold an FTX about 2-3 times a year.

Q: What is an ACR?
A: An ACR is an Annual Ceremonial Review. Sometimes you might see it called an AGR, for Annual General Review. This is a year-end display of what cadets have learned. It's a big deal because the corps is reviewed by a visiting dignitary, and you can invite your family to attend. This is the time when awards are usually given to cadets who have distinguished themselves through hard work and perseverance. Will you be one of those cadets?
