When it comes time to polish your parade boots, you want a nice fresh tin of Kiwi and not something that has gotten all dry and cracked. It helps to buy a small tin and to be careful to close it well when not in use. You also want to try to buy from a store that is selling a good quantity of polish, so the tins aren't sitting on the shelf for months on end.
But are there other ways to keep the polish from cracking?
Well, for one, if you're going to use a brush or other applicator when you apply a base coat or blacken your combat boots, you probably want to keep an older tin just for that. Use only a soft cotton cloth, when it comes to your freshest tin of polish. Keeping the surface smooth and unscratched will help prevent cracking.
Another trick you may have heard of is putting an old copper penny into the polish tin. The penny is supposed to increase the pressure in the tin, and supply a small amount of moisture to prevent drying. It probably works best if you slowly work the penny down into the bottom center of the tin, as you use up the polish from the cake.
Last tip, remember never to use the lid of your polish tin to hold water. Some people say this can cause the polish to crack.
